request an appointmentWhat is venous disease?
Venous disease is a common problem that affects an estimated 15% of the American population. The condition develops when veins become damaged and blood cannot flow properly.
Your veins contain a series of tiny valves that keep blood flowing in a one-way direction. When these valves become weakened or damaged, blood can begin to move backward within the affected blood vessel. That blood then pools, creating pressure that weakens the vein walls and causes them to bulge.
This can cause varicose veins, or a condition called thrombophlebitis, which is inflammation of a vein either near your skin’s surface (superficial thrombophlebitis) or deeper into your body (deep-vein thrombophlebitis).
What is the VNUS Closure procedure?
The VNUS Closure procedure is a treatment for peripheral venous disease (varicose veins). It begins with ultrasound imaging to determine the exact location of the diseased vein. Once Dr. Misra can see the portion of the vein that is no longer functioning, he creates a small incision to insert a thin catheter into the end of the vein located nearest your groin.
A mixture of numbing medication and saline is delivered through the catheter to eliminate sensation in the treatment area. Next, radiofrequency energy is directed through the treatment catheter and into the damaged vein.
This energy creates heat that prompts the vein to shrink and eventually collapse. Dr. Misra then carefully removes the catheter, again using ultrasound imaging as a guide. He covers the incision site with a bandage, and the healing process begins.
Recovering from VNUS Closure requires only a day or two of taking it easy. Most people can return to normal activities quickly and report relief from varicose vein symptoms within a couple of weeks after treatment.
How is VNUS different from vein stripping?
Vein stripping is also a treatment for varicose veins. The process involves surgically removing damaged veins from the body. During the procedure, incisions are made in the skin over both ends of a damaged vein.
A thin, flexible wire is inserted into the vein. Once the wire reaches the end of the damaged section of vein, the blood vessel is cut and the wire is tied to the vein. The wire is then pulled out, which, in turn, pulls the vein from your body.
While a relatively minor surgical procedure, vein stripping is still more invasive than other available options. Many practitioners prefer treatments like VNUS Closure, which eliminates diseased veins without surgically removing them from your body.
