What can be done to treat varicose veins?

There are multiple treatments for varicose veins. During your initial visit, you’ll discuss the options with Dr. Misra and decide which approach best fits your specific set of needs.

Vein surgery

Surgical procedures like vein stripping and vein ligation remove damaged veins through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. While surgical extraction is effective, there are less invasive options available.

Laser therapy

Endovenous laser therapy uses controlled beams of light to create heat within targeted veins. This heat damages the vein walls, causing them to collapse. Your body processes the nonviable tissue and eliminates it through your lymphatic system.

Radiofrequency closure

This treatment uses radiofrequency energy to create heat and constriction in targeted veins. As with laser therapy, the veins collapse and are removed through your lymphatic system. The VNUS Closure® system is an example of radiofrequency closure.

Injection therapy

This approach uses a small syringe to inject a chemical solution into damaged veins. This solution causes the vein’s walls to adhere together, effectively sealing the vein. The treated veins will turn into scar tissue and be eliminated from your body.

If you have questions about which approach might be right for you, come in for a one-on-one consultation.

Can self-care help treat varicose veins?

There are steps you can take at home to try and reduce the appearance of varicose veins. Elevating your feet above your waist several times throughout each day can decrease the pressure in your veins and prevent bulging.

You might also try wearing compression stockings. These special garments have a tight fit and work to compress your veins and ease discomfort.

Wearing compression socks or stockings regularly can prevent varicose veins from worsening and improve blood flow. You can purchase compression socks or stockings at many pharmacies and drugstores. There are also prescription garments available that can offer a better fit.

Once varicose veins develop, they usually won’t resolve on their own. Treatment is needed to eliminate the damaged veins and restore a more uniform skin appearance.

What happens if I forego varicose vein treatment?

In some cases, varicose veins are nothing more than an aesthetic issue. Because the veins are often raised above the rest of your skin, they can bleed more easily. However, these veins can sometimes develop into more serious health concerns.

When blood clots form within varicose veins, a condition called superficial thrombophlebitis develops. This can be painful but isn’t usually a serious health problem.

When blood clots develop in a vein located deeper inside your body, the condition is called deep vein thrombosis. If one of those clots emerges from the damaged vein and travels to your lungs, a pulmonary embolism can occur. This is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical assistance.
