What is radiofrequency closure?

Varicose veins occur when the tiny valves within a vein become weakened or damaged. This allows blood to begin to move backward in the vein. The blood pools and the vein can no longer transport deoxygenated blood back to your heart.

That blood begins to clot and effectively becomes trapped in the vein, which often bulges and twists under the pressure of accumulated blood. Varicose veins won’t usually improve without treatment.

Radiofrequency closure uses a particular form of energy to eliminate damaged blood vessels from your body. Scottsdale Vascular Clinic offers the VNUS Closure® system, a leading option among radiofrequency treatment platforms.

How does radiofrequency closure work?

Radiofrequency energy is a form of electromagnetic energy. During your treatment, Dr. Misra inserts a special catheter into the damaged vein. As radiofrequency energy passes through the catheter, it heats the vein walls, damaging those tissues and causing your body to react by developing scar tissue.

This treatment relies on close contact between the vein walls and the catheter. To achieve this contact, Dr. Misra injects a solution of anesthetic and saline into the tissue surrounding the vein before initiating radiofrequency energy. Compression stockings work to further improve the connection between catheter and vein walls.

Radiofrequency closure has a high success rate. It usually only takes one treatment to achieve the desired results, but you’ll have to wait several months to see the full effects.

What are some benefits of radiofrequency closure?

Radiofrequency closure can eliminate unsightly varicose veins without a surgical procedure. This is an outpatient treatment, so you’ll be able to return home right away.

The recovery process is relatively simple. You’ll wear a compression stocking for 2-3 weeks after your treatment and can resume most normal activities right away. Dr. Misra checks your veins during your follow-up visit and will advise you on any special recovery instructions.

Radiofrequency closure is a good option for people who want to correct varicose veins without surgery. The treatment carries few risks, and most people are great candidates. When you’re ready for more information, call the office to book a visit or schedule online in just a matter of moments.
